Get familiar with Python, one of the most widely-used and widely-taught programming languages in senior schools, universities and businesses, and learn to code from the ground up.
WHAT SKILLS WILL WE DEVELOP?
Students will learn the fundamentals of coding – key concepts and structure of languages and projects.
This course will help develop project design skills – theory and practice for designing a simple game or app.
Students will be guided in the development of Project Management and problem-solving skills by designing, implementing, testing, iterating and trouble-shooting their own project.
Students will acquire the foundations of computer science to continue their independent or school-based learning in the future.
While this is a beginners’ course, we do find that many teens who have already started to learn to program on their own find our “back to basics” approach very helpful as they fill in any gaps in their fundamentals. Our goal is for each participant to feel confident coding, and to be able to continue to learn on their own with tools and resources that are available to them.
- Python is a powerful object-oriented programming language that is one of best general and all-purpose programming languages in which to begin your coding development.
- Python is used in almost every area of industry – aerospace (ISS Robonaut), physics (Data analysis in the Hadron Collider), astronomy (Meerkat Radio Telescope), Music (Spotify), Movies (Netflix streaming), Search (Google – early development).
Example projects students complete:
- A mini calculator
- A currency convertor
- Temperature converter - Password Checker
Students acquire the following skills:
- Knowledge of Advanced Strings and Regular Expressions
- How to use Reusable Code (OS & URLlib module)
- Introduction to testing, unit testing, errors and Exceptions
- Open data sources

WHAT IS THE TUTOR:STUDENT RATIO?
We have a maximum of 8 students per tutor.
DO I NEED TO BRING ANY EQUIPMENT?
Students should bring their own headphones or earphones. Smartphones can be used to take photos or videos that they can use as content for projects, to test games and apps and if they want us to load a game they have created onto their device.
Students should bring their own snacks or lunch, if and when necessary.
We provide laptops for the most courses. However all other classes require a BYOD (bring your own device). This will make it easier for students to install the programs they need to continue working independently at home after the course has finished.
If a student requires a laptop for a class for which we normally do not provide a laptop, please make sure this is clearly stated in the registration form.
Other specialist equipment is normally provided although we may recommend that a student invest in their own devices or tech equipment of they should wish to continue developing their projects after the course has finished. More information is available upon request.
WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
